Arthur Samuel joins IBM’s Poughkeepsie Laboratory and begins work on some of the very first machine learning programs, first creating programs that play checkers.

1956
The term “artificial intelligence” is coined at a summer conference at Dartmouth University, organized by young computer scientist John McCarthy.
